Personally, whenever someone proudly shows off their new tattoo to me, I say “that looks brilliant” regardless of my true feelings.
Perhaps that is due to the rather permanent nature of tattoos, as well as the not inconsiderable financial burden and physical pain that tend to come arm in arm with a decision to mark the skin in such a way. There is a possibility that I am somewhat jealous of the “inked” community, resplendent with quirky sketches and meaningful messages artfully etched on their skin. My own complexion sometimes feels a little dull by comparison. The chief reason for my tattoo-free body, though, is the unfortunate fact that I am far too much of a wimp to endure the pain. With a pain threshold so laughably low that I feel faint after a mere stubbing of the toe, one feels sure that withstanding the slings and arrows of becoming inked are beyond me. Paris Jackson, though, would appear to have no such qualms. Jackson has several tattoos already, and appears to have added another to her repertoire after she was spotted at a West Hollywood tattoo parlour with her godfather Macaulay Culkin. E! News reports that Jackson and Culkin visited Tattoo Mania in West Hollywood on Saturday to get matching tattoos. Later, Jackson posted photos of their brand new ink on her Instagram story. It would appear that the pair got matching “spoon” tattoos, the significance of which remains unclear. Culkin is Paris Jackson’s godfather, and has reportedly remained close to the Jackson family following the death of Michael Jackson in 2009. Indeed, getting matching tattoos is but one in a string of Jackson/Culkin bonding activities, as this Insta of a pedicure session will surely attest to. It would appear that Paris Jackson has something of an affinity for matching tattoos, presumably holding significance between whoever she gets them with. This year, Paris and her brother Prince had yin and yang matching tattoos done. Paris posted a picture of their ink on Instagram, along with a touching description in which she explains the meaning; “/yin/ [in Chinese philosophy] the passive female principle of the universe, characterized as female and sustaining and associated with structure, night, the moon, fluidity, calmness, the earth, darkness, cold, death, and ascends energy. /yang/ the active male principle of the universe, characterized as male and creative and associated with function, the sky and sun, speed, expression, heaven, heat, light, birth, and descends energy. “Sometimes i feel like my big brother and i always think the same thoughts, he just doesn’t have a filter and always vocalizes them though total opposites, like my gooko and i, the inseparable yin and yang work together finding and causing balance within each other. matchies with my [email protected]!” It’s wonderful to see tattoos that hold some sentimental value, rather than vacuous, pale imitations of artwork or patterns that have no significance to the wearer other than “looking cool”.
